Sabu Jiyana’s Matimba Project
A bridge between ancestral sounds and contemporary global rhythms. Revitalizing African heritage through the voice of the Uhadi and Umrhubhe bows.
Cultivating the Sound of Identity
Founded in 2017 by acclaimed South African composer and educator Sabu Jiyana, the Matimba Project is a dynamic music initiative rooted in deep respect for African aesthetic principles.
The project is particularly dedicated to revitalizing traditional instruments, including the uhadi and umrhubhe musical bows, while integrating modern musical elements. Through this approach, Sabu Jiyana’s Matimba Project demonstrates that embracing modernity does not require abandoning heritage but rather strengthening it through thoughtful innovation. The music reflects themes of identity, memory, spirituality, and social consciousness, positioning the ensemble as both cultural custodians and forward-looking creators.
Since its inception, the Matimba Project has steadily grown in artistic depth and recognition, captivating audiences at major festivals, concert halls, and cultural platforms across South Africa. The ensemble is celebrated for its powerful live performances, educational impact, and commitment to telling African stories through music.
Reviving Heritage, Innovating Sound
Rooted in a deep respect for African musical traditions, the project seeks to preserve and reimagine indigenous sounds for contemporary global audiences.
Drawing inspiration from African aesthetic principles such as polyrhythms, interlocking patterns, call-and-response, and rich timbral textures, the Matimba Project presents a sound that is both authentically African and universally resonant.
